It's Friday already and time for Friday Fragments, which is where I get rid of all those random thoughts that are tickling the inside of my head. Anybody can fragment, thanks to our lovely and talented hostess, Mrs. 4444 from Half Past Kissin' Time. She keeps track of all the FF-ers over at her site, and you should stop by and check it out. Actually, if you're not reading her regularly, why aren't you? She's funny AND nice - a perfect combo!
* Thanks for all the positive energy around my second interview on Wednesday. I think it went well, and I did find out that they called my references yesterday, which I hope is a good sign. I very much liked everything about this place, especially the people, and hope to have some really good news to share with you soon. I’m trying not to get too excited. I’m afraid if I don’t get it, I’ll be incredibly disappointed. Oh well, nothing to do but wait.
* Did you ever lose something that it is impossible to lose? Like something that it so big that it couldn’t be hiding anywhere? Or something you use every day, that only ever gets put in the same place, and has never left the bathroom? Doesn’t that drive you crazy? I was walking across the living room floor, holding an empty bowl and two chopsticks in one hand, when I stopped to pick something up off the floor. When I straightened up, I had only one chopstick. Could I find the other one? Nope. I looked everywhere, on my hands and knees, for half an hour. It literally couldn’t be anyplace else, and I still can’t find it. The biggest bummer is that it was one of the cool, shiny bamboo chopsticks, of which I only have four. I mean, three. I think my mother was wrong. Things really do sprout legs and walk away. If you ever see a shiny bamboo chopstick with legs, it’s mine.
* Having Alex back in the household is wonderful, but it sure has required me to adjust my grocery list. He is a snacker. We all snack, of course, but Alex has raised the idea to an art form. He would rather graze all day on snacks, and never have to sit down for an actual meal. Unlike Brandon, who loves to create elaborate meals using every single pot and pan that I own, Alex has no patience for food prep. He wants to grab and go. That box of granola bars that was lasting a week this summer is now empty in two days. The omelet breakfast does not work for Alex – cross off eggs and jot down bagels. Get more snack-size baggies (he’ll eat healthy food if it is in grab-able bags!) and serving-size pudding and yogurt. I’d love to hear your favorite grab-and-go snacks – what can you recommend?
* I think that if you drink decaffeinated coffee, it’s really important to get the good stuff. In my opinion, good decaf – which means spending more than $5 - for the 13 ounce bag that used to be a pound of coffee, but don’t get me started on shrinking packages and rising prices – is almost as good as real coffee. This week I’ve been drinking some store-brand swill that I bought in a moment of stupidity (or poverty). I can’t afford to throw it out, so I’m drinking it, but I’m pissed off about it. Ironically, because it sucks, it’s lasting longer than my usual brand.
* Do you know what high school kids can wear for gym class up here? ANYTHING THEY WANT. Yup. They can wear anything they want, as long as it is not the clothes they came to school in. They are required to change, but it doesn’t matter into what. You can wear jeans and a t-shirt to school, and change into another pair of jeans and a different t-shirt, and it’s totally allowed. Alex usually brings long basketball shorts and a t-shirt. Boy, things have changed since I was in high school. We used to have to wear these horrible stretch knit shorts and a horizontally striped, polyester polo shirt. Life is so unfair. Maybe this is one of the reasons I hated gym class, and only took the minimum amount I needed to graduate, and Alex signs up for it as an elective every year.
* When I was housesitting recently, I noticed that they had an air freshener in their bathroom that was called Moroccan Bazaar. I think Febreeze makes it - very elegant packaging, too. When I was growing up, we had two choices for freshening the air: Lysol and FLORAL. And neither of them was refreshing. Lysol makes me gag to this very day, and we all know what those bathroom smells are like when you add floral scent. Hallie, I know you have smell issues at work. Maybe you should try spritzing a little Moroccan Bazaar and humming “As Time Goes By” from Casablanca. Let me know how it works out.

I hope you all have a wonderful long weekend (if you’re in another country that doesn’t have Labor Day, I hope you have a wonderful regular weekend!) and I’ll be by to visit your blogs!

I DOUBT anything can help the smells her MET. You KNOW they are almost unbearable. Tuesday, I was almost certain, someone or something had died in there. Or, at the very least, left a steaming pile of their innards on the floor. It was just that bad. Makes my eyes water just thinking about it.
Hallie
Mary Ellen...does Alex eat fruit? I always (in the warm weather) keep a container of fresh fruit in the frig.
Cantaloupe, watermelon and green grapes...blueberries work. It lasts for several days without getting mushy, is healthy and yummy. Another good thing is golden raisins mixed with yougert covered nuts (buy them in bulk). Did you ever make your own bagel chips? Great way to use up old
bagels. Thin slices...toss with whatever you like (garlic salt, dill or whatever) and a little bit of olive oil...put on a cookie sheet and slow bake for an hour.
Checking your references is good. Let's hope you have an announcement for us very soon. What is the job?
This job surely seems to be yours, so YAY!!!!!!
I'm the snacker in this house. No need to put anything in smaller containers when I can finish off the entire bag in one sitting.
I'm off now to look for your chopstick.
Yeah on checking references.
I came your way via Mrs.4444 and I've been browsing around awhile, reading your story. It's so amazing, and you've actually given me an insight of how my ex-husband felt/feels. He and his brother and sister were all adopted, and I believe that he had/has emotional issues tied to his adoption, which contributed to our divorce.
At my son's high school, they have to at least wear gym shorts and a t-shirt. I think it's insane that they don't make the kids actually dress out anymore.
I hope you have a great weekend as well, and I'll keep my eye out for your chopstick! ;)
tell me where it is!!!
Email me if you don't want to post it publicly. No one in the blog world knows Mark's Showplace anyway, so just tell me
:-)
PS: did ya use me as a reference?
They get to choose their gym clothese!? Lucky them. I hated gym growing up too. I was SO glad when I was able to take dance in the place of gym.
You crack me up with the Lysol and FLORAL statement. I am a home fragrance nut! I have candles and plugins everywhere. My parents still use Lysol. I choke on Lysol. Yuck! I can literally taste it just typing this. My through is burning. Yuck!
I know about Mark's Showplace, Andrew - not from personal experience, of course. At least we know it isn't at the topless donut shop since that burnt down. :)
We had oh-so-attractive one piece gym outfits. They were a jersey knit and made to look like they were two pieces. The bottom was green and the attached sleeveless top was striped green.
Our school has modified phys ed so it is more of a health class. Evan is doing CPR for the first 6 weeks this fall. Not that CPR is a bad idea but where is the exercise?
oooh, calling your references is a good sign!!
I try to keep baby carrots and grapes in baggies in the fridge so my kid will grab those
They can wear whatever they want to gym? Weird.
The kids I nanny for are complete snackers/graze all day and then take one bite of food for an actual meal. Drives me nuts.
So good to hear about the interview!! And, I'm not a coffee drinker, but I love me a cold Coke every morning...full of caffeine! Oh, and I love fresh fruit. Give that a try.
P.S. Thank you so much for the super sweet comment you left today. It meant a lot.
The Mysterious Missing Chopstick. I hate when that happens Too funny
I can also conjure the smell of Lysol from my childhood. Yuck. Febreeze is infinetly more pleasant. Thanks for your comments
That scent sounds good! I might have to look for it. And good luck finding that other chop stick...I have so done something similar before! :)
I like the Special K protein bars - chocolatey chip! They are delish! And one of my favorite snacks!
We used to have to wear hideous red shorts and blue t-shirts with our schools logo on them. Oh and did I mention we had to purchase them?! That is a little odd that they can wear whatever they want as long as they change.
I really hope you get the job. I used to work in HR and we'd only call references if we were really serious about the candidate! Good Luck!
I HATE when I lose stuff like that. Usually it is crap that I just had in my hand FIVE SECONDS AGO that disappears for months at a time. I'm starting to growl just thinking about it.
Oh No, No, No! You have to get the good decaf otherwise it's like you are punishing yourself.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed about your job prospect. It's definitely a good sign that they called references. Good luck!
I can't stand it when stuff like that goes missing! I mean, it was RIGHT THERE not two seconds ago and suddenly it's vanished into thin air!
The gym clothes thing is weird. We either had to buy our gym clothes from the school or have something from home with the exact same colors.
DEFINITELY a good sign when they're calling your references! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you, which makes it difficult to type...a;aeiba;liej;f;lakj see? :)
Princess Nagger is a grazer, too - and when I buy the 'healthy' snacks so she'll have 'grab-n-go', she'll polish them off too fast...which doesn't make them so 'healthy'. And she's only 6, so I can only imagine how much worse it'll get as she gets older! :)
I can't stand the smell of Lysol for the same reasons as you - I'll have to check out that new Febreeze Moroccan scent...sounds intriguing (and so much better than Lysol or FLORAL!) ;)
Happy FF a day late! :)
We lost a ladle once...in the middle of serving the soup. My mother set it down on the spoon rest and when she came back to serve up some more soup, it was gone. That was almost 30 years ago and we still wonder what happened to the ladle. In fact when anything goes missing we say "It must be with the ladle!"
I do hope you find your chopstick :)
Our snack foods are limited since we don't have any children & I try real hard not to buy snacky food LOL, but I love string cheese in the individual packages as well as my mixture of pecans, walnuts, almonds and chocolate chips. I put those in ziplocs, ready to run out the door. I make about 5 or 6 of them up all at once.
my kids love fruits and veggies in those baggies... takes a few min of prep time for me but makes grab and go work... they love chex mix in grab bags, cookies, goldfish ritz peperoni anything they like to eat the love a grab bag of it.
I loved your fragments this week - great bits! :D Happy long weekend!
I actually love the smell of Lysol. But I am an odd duck. :)
P.S. I finally put a new post up!
OMG-You're funny. I HATE the smell of roses from a can--it always reminds me of my grandma's bathroom.
I recommend almonds in a snack-sized bag. Kyle loves them! Also, string cheese. Caution Flag--SO funny!
Hope you got the job AND found the chopstick (that's crazy!!)
That was a great post !
I have a theory about lost stuff...it has to do with an old "Twilight Zone" episode that I think might be true...a little girl falls out of her bed and into another dimension in the wall of her bedroom and nearly gets swallowed up forever...that's where your chopstick really is LOL !
BTW,
That episode is where they got the idea for the movie "Poltergeist"
Well...? I'm waiting...I want to know if you got the job!
Didya, didya!!!
Nice blogging, My review is very good example.
