Stop the Music!

Back for more Friday Fragments. You know, Friday is becoming my favorite bloggy day, I think because I can be totally random and it's okay. If you like fragments, check out the original - and still the best - Mrs. 4444 over at Half Past Kissin' Time.
* I’ve caught a few reruns of The Golden Girls lately, and I found them much funnier than I remembered. To my horror, I’ve just realized WHY they seem funnier. It’s because I’m closer to their ages now than I was when they were on originally. Suddenly all those jokes about hot flashes, mammograms and memory loss? Sadly, much more relevant.

* I spend a fair amount of time with some friends of mine who are a tad advanced in age (she’s 72, he’s 82). I've sort of adopted them (I know! ironic, isn't it?) and I help out with rides to the doctor and computer assistance and such. They’ll be the first to admit that their memories are slipping a bit. They joke about ‘playing my favorite game’ which is when they try to remember the name of some movie, or actor, or the words to some song, and they describe it until I blurt it out. It goes something like this: Joe: That actor, what was his name – he was in that movie that Marlon Brando was so famous for, and he was also in that movie about the jurors with Henry Fonda. Me: Lee J. Cobb! He was in On the Waterfront with Marlon Brando and 12 Angry Men with Henry Fonda! I totally love that game. I hope, when I get to the point that I’m playing on the other side, that I have somebody to play with.

* I have a pile of questions to look at over the weekend from my contest (still open through midnight tonight). If ever there was a good example of the saying ‘be careful what you wish for’ this is definitely it. There are some pretty impressive questions there. It’s going to be hard to pick a winner, and even harder to answer them. Who the heck thought that this contest was a good idea, anyway?

* If anybody knows the person who wrote the music that plays in the background of video games, could you give me their address? I want to go and kick their ass. I just spent an hour trying to work on my computer while the world’s most annoying music played continuously in the background. If I wasn’t such a nice mommy, I would have drop-kicked the game system right through the TV. I hate it when everybody is playing nicely – then I have no excuse to turn the damn thing off.

* Do you ever have that experience when somebody shuts off the radio/CD player/TV/Video Game and you realize that you have been clenching every muscle in your body because the noise has made you insane? Maybe it's just me.

1. I LOVED the Golden Girls. It was my third favorite show that had characters who used sarcasm as a comedic device. Taxi was first, Newhart was second.

2. I play a similar game with my mother.

Mom: "Is your camera, you know, able to do that thing with computers?"

Me: "Digital?"

Mom: "Yeah. And does it take 8-by-10s?"

Me: "Mom, what?"

3. Good luck with the questions. I still think mine is the best. No pressure

4. The same fuckers who come up with those annoying ring tones on cell phones

4. I have that same problem with certain people's voices.

Thanks a LOT! Now you've got that 1980's PacMan tune stuck in my head!

That memory game is scary; I'm playing it already (on the wrong team!)

Dang-I'm a weekend reader; thanks for giving me a heads-up about the contest!!

Have a great weekend :)

When Evan was in middle school, one of his classmates played the theme songs to several video games in the talent show. One year, he used various musical instruments. He had/has "issues" as the kids would say. Hmmmm. Perhaps caused by listening to the video games music so much? You might be on to something!

What is really irritating is trying to work in an office with several people and the radio on. One of my co-worker: Heavy sigh "This song sucks. I think we have heard it 3 times today." Heavy sigh.
Co-worker two: "Did the fire truck just go by?"
Me: "No, why?"
Co-worker two: "I thought I heard it." (It was because a Donna Summer song was playing and she was 100% serious).
o-worker one: "This song sucks too." Starts singing along making up her own lyrics (I always wonder - if the song sucks so bad, how does she always know the words and melody?)
Third co-worker: "Gee, that reminds me of another song." (Opens up youtube and starts playing another song loudly.
Co-worker one: "It's too loud."
Co-worker two: "It's not loud enough."
Co-worker three: "Let's change the channel."

Me: Sitting there, quietly going insane.

Gah! It's the video game music that makes me try to distract my kids from their requests to get the PS2 out and play every Friday night. Twenty minutes in and I'm ready to take a bat to the gaming system!

Those Golden Girls reruns are addictive. I've caught my son watching those.

My questions:

What would a perfect day look like for you?

Where would you like to visit/travel in the world?

What is your ideal number of dogs?

If you could live anywhere-where?
What would be your perfect night out (think big and you don’t need to keep it local)?

Can you describe a perfect moment in your life…a moment when you could have said “this is it”?

Who would you love to have dinner with?

That’s all I have for now

Visiting from Friday Fragments...

I totally am finding Golden Girls funnier myself... I never realized why either... now i'm depressed :)

LOL that is not even funny but it is real I agree with the golden girl scenario. They say you get smarter with more experience but as we near the golden girl age I am not so sure if I want to be that smart yet

I love the Golden Girls. I used to watch it religiously in college. With all my gay male friends. They all identified with Blanche. :)

Love Friday Fragments!!

I totally understand the game music, it drives me bonkers. Farmie isn't much of a gamer, but when he does he has to play with it muted

That sounds like a very fun game!

I too hate the damned video game music. I admittedly have a Wii, but I try to play it with out the sound because it ticks me off!!!

If you've never seen the play "Over the River and Through the Woods" by Joe di Pietro, you have to go. It's a wonderful show about a grown man and his still developing relationship with and understanding of his grandparents. In one scene, they play Trivial Pursuit. You have to see it!

My husband watches some of the most annoying movies - and when it's finally over, I can feel all the muscles in my body relax.

I do the movie thing now and I'm in my 40's. Did it in my 30's and 20's. Thankfully I have a sister (24 years younger than me) that is excellent at that game.

I made a deal... you can play the games with no sound... or you can play them in the backyard. Of course you might have a problem with yours liking being outdoors, though.

I play that game now with anybody who's around. The first time I played that I can recall was during a trivial pursuit, the answer was Mount Everest. I was describing about the sherpas, and people losing their lives trying to reach the top, etc., etc. The people I was playing with were so impressed with what all I was telling them that they gave me the piece of the pie...

The Golden Girls were wonderful... also Designing Women, Newhart, Taxi...

I like Friday Fragments.

So, I do have a question.

But I didn't want to ask it in a public forum.

But then I thought, well, you can just NOT answer it if it's totally tasteless and horrible.

I've been thinking a lot about relationships and how we say goodbye in them. And I was just wondering, if someone called and said that your birth mother was dying and asked you to come to her side and ask her one question, what would it be? What one other thing would you want to say to her?

I hope this isn't awful and hurtful. I was thinking of it as an exercise in forgiveness and letting go but I'm sure I've failed. I can never seem to do either with grace myself.

Is it wrong for me to fertilize my coffee plant with organic fertilizer made from coffee beans?

Jojo's question makes my brain hurt when I think about trying to answer it.
Haven't had enough coffee yet, perhaps.
