Phantom Fragments

Welcome to Friday Fragments. If you're new, FF is the place to release all those thoughts that fly around your head, interfering with your new digital TV reception. If you like randomness, check out our hostess and the inventor of Friday Fragments, Mrs. 4444 over at Half Past Kissin' Time. If you have time, take a few minutes and visit the other fragmenters, who are all conveniently linked over there - it's some of my favorite weekend reading.

* It would be hard to describe exactly how hot it is backstage at the theater, especially during the performances. Stage lights, crowded spaces and overheated, heavily made up and costumed actors combine to make it feel like the fourth circle of hell. I am sweating so much back there I think I have formed a perfect biosphere inside my headset earpiece. Last night I'm pretty sure it rained in there.

* I'm remembering how different each performance of a show can be. Energy levels can change, and the audience can be a huge factor. Last night the audience didn't laugh in spots that our dress rehearsal audience loved, but laughed uproariously in totally unexpected places. As long as they're laughing, though, I'm happy.

* You'll be happy to know that the toilet survived the show intact during opening night. One of my favorite commenters, Scriptor Senex had this to say about the toilet incident:

Well, I've heard of having people who learned the lines and waited backstage in the hope that the actor was taken poorly and they could go on and make a name for themselves. I didn't know that toilets did it as well! Whatever toilet number 2 does it will never be remembered for its part the way toilet no 1 will be! May it rest in peace.

* My youngest son is leaving for the summer today. Even though I've known he was doing this for months, and even though I know it's a great opportunity for him to work AND have a great time, I can't shake the sadness I feel. I'm going to miss him terribly.

* Hallie, over at Wonderful World of Wieners, is having a fundraising raffle. The money raised is going to one of my favorite causes, promoting organ donation. Hallie's dad, Bill, was the recipient of a new heart 6 years ago, and she's wanted to do something to help the cause for a long time. The prizes she's collected for the raffle are amazing and are worth thousands of dollars. Read about the raffle here, or go here and read about the fundraiser. It's a great cause, and you can win some unbelievable stuff with a donation of even $1...what are you waiting for?

You forgot to mention the departure of your son!

(Okay, I'm not privy to EVERYTHING in your life, but you ARE my stage manager. I expect better from you young lady)

Anyway, hang in there. Come to the theatre tonight, energized and upbeat.

And look at it this way, can you imagine if they gave ME a headset? We'd be laughing over EVERYONE'S lines...

Does someone have to wear your headset after you're done with it? A perfect biosphere! That was wonderful!

Sorry to hear that your boy is leaving. It must be very difficult :(

I can so relate to your feelings about your son leaving for the summer! My girls are in and out a lot more now that they are "adults" and it bothers me every time one of them has to go off on and adventure or work that keeps them away for a longer period of time.

I will be attending the show tonight! I have managed to get Betsy, Betsy's neighbor, and my boss Cyndi, to come along with me. I might even go again next weekend with Sally, who can't go tonight because she has Mom duty. It is going to be a blast!

Your description of the heat back stage was great. I haven't been there, but I could picture it. Glad to know that Opening Night went well and that the audience responded. Any reviews yet?

Our son leaves for five weeks in July, and it's going to leave us in tears, I'm afraid. Really gonna miss that kid, but I guess it's good practice for the future; we can't keep him forever :)

Off to join in the raffle fun!

P.S. Looks like you're missing this: http://www.halfpastkissintime.com/2009/06/friday-fragments_19.html

If it would help any, I'd loan you either of my boys for a week or so. You can split up the time and have them one at a time even!

I hope the summer passes quickly for you - at least the missing your son part.

I know you will miss Alex. Hopefully you can look at the bright side and spend some time putting yourself first for a change! I will sacrifice and be available to do things with you. :)

lol That is hilarious about la toilette (I think it should be given a French name to make it sound more distinguished like any major actor would be!)

Oh man I remember one play I did where we all had to go get our makeup completely REDONE after every act because it was literally melting off out faces, then I realized how much tougher it was for the crew because at least on stage there's air movement! I can only imagine that you are suffering the same fate. Yikes biosphere indeed! :)

Where's your son going? What's he doing? I know how hard that is for parents (my Mom won't stop telling me about how hard it was to leave me at University on the other side of the country.) But he'll be back and he'll have missed his Mom! :)

Good luck to you and youngest son while he's away. It's nice to be described as one of your favourite commenters, especially as it's always a pleasure to visit.

I hope this summer goes by quickly and he is back soon:-) But don't think I am rushing to winter now, lol

Youngest son left for the summer? Where did he go? What will you and the doggies do without him? It's a little funny how I put "doggie" and "do" next to one another. Yup, another Friday night at home with too much wine!
Glad that you and the toilet survived opening night!

I always love your friday frags! It sounds like the play is going well...well, except for the hot, sweaty..um..lights, yeah, hot and sweaty. O.K. i'm back. Where is the boy going for the summer??? That is hard on a mama, I hope you'll be o.k. Have a good weekend ME...;p

Yay for the play going well it's first night! You have made me yearn for the theatre again.

Your son is leaving for the whole summer? I don't know how you will cope.

In our family, we have this memory of something we call The Bath Incident. I had just given birth to my first child and the nurse was giving her a bath in that totally fearless, flip 'em over and scrub 'em down kind of way and I. Just. Lost. It.

We blamed it on hormones at the time but I think it was really the idea that one day she would pack up and leave for the entire summer!
