But I Won't Do That

Yesterday I told you what some of my favorite foods are. I think I've already established what a lover of food I am. I do love to eat, and like a wide variety of things. I love all sections of the food pyramid, and very seldom do I ever refuse food. That being said, there are a few things I won't eat. When I say I won't eat them, I mean it. I won't do it, even to be polite (unless, perhaps, that you are the Queen of England or Pierce Brosnan. Then I might consider it.) Anyway, here they are, in no particular order:

These things scare me. Look at their beadly little eyes. And starched marshmallows? Bad. Very, very bad. Couldn't eat them if I wanted.

Moxie is a vile concoction that was invented in Maine. I want to be supportive and proud of my state, but this stuff is gross. If you've never had it, it's sort of like a cross between Dr. Pepper and cherry cough syrup. Doesn't it sound yummy?

Jello. I know, it's America's favorite dessert, but I can't do it. The texture creeps me out. My cousins used to squeeze it through their teeth, and even that memory makes me shudder.

Again, a texture thing, I think. They squeak against your teeth. And I'm not convinced that they aren't made out of styrofoam, which I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to eat.

Cabbage. I hate everything about it - how it tastes, but especially how it smells when it's cooking.

Along the same lines, I can't stand New England Boiled Dinner, which is boiled cabbage with the delightful addition of corned beef. I don't like corned beef either. What is corned, anyway? It doesn't sound like something you should be doing to food that you're going to eat.

I like most cheeses. Actually, I LOVE most cheeses. Cheese rules. Except this one. Blue Cheese is one thing I wish I liked, because the people who like it seem to really, really like it. But I can't. I think it tastes like feet. And what's the blue stuff? Isn't it mold? We're not supposed to eat mold, are we? Sorry, but I don't get it.

Cooked peaches. This is a case of taking something so very yummy - Fresh peaches - and making them inedible by cooking them until their texture is slimy and disgusting. Don't be cooking my peaches, and don't be putting them in pie or ice cream. That's just wrong.

Raw sushi. I want to be seen as a sophisticated woman. For the most part, I'm pretty good at faking it, too. But, if we go to a sushi bar or restaurant, I'll be the one eating the lame cooked sushi and grimacing every time you bite into a hunk of raw fish. I like my meat and fish cooked, although when it comes to steak, I only want it SLIGHTLY cooked. But that's another story.

Pickled beets. My parents and grandparents loved them. My grandmother used to make them and we had them at just about every meal from June through September. They give me the heebie-jeebies, along with pickled eggs, pickled pigs feet and pickled onions. In my opinion, the only things that should be pickled are, well, pickles.
There you have it - the foods I love to hate. I can't wait to get your reactions. Do you love some of these foods? What other foods give you the full-body heaves? Spill.

I hate lamb.
And probably bugs.

New England boiled dinner - with HAM not corned beef - is one of my favorites of all time.

Funny, funny, funny! I LOVE all of those things save the sushi. I agree about eating raw fish, or beef tartar.

Well ME, I've got you beat! I LOVE all KINDS of FOod too...even the ones you listed...except the SUSHI.I HAVE to AGREE with you on that!

Oh, those orange circus peanut/styrofoam things are terrible...but, in a pinch I could eat 'em. Same with the Peeps. I've always wanted to try Moxie, just because I've heard of it but have never "seen" it anywhere around here. But your description makes me think...naw, not so much. Don't like cough syrup! I will not be eating raw fish, either, although I would try one of those cute little roll things with the rice, avocado and fake crab. All of the rest? Like it, especially the cabbage and the New England Boiled Dinner. NUM! My Mom used to make it for St. Patty's Day and I loved it. So I'm guessing you don't like reuben sandwiches, huh? BWAHAHA! :)

Braunschweigert. OMG, I almost lose it just typing the word. That is the ONE thing I CANNOT eat. It will not go all the way down, nor do I want it to. Ish. And I'm not too crazy about okra. And lutefisk. That's about all I can think of right now, though.

I heart jello. It's like a comfort food to me, which is ironic since my Mom confessed that she fed it to me when I was a baby--older baby--just to see me do the full-body shiver once the jiggly goodness hit my little mouth. :)

I can agree with you on most of these, though I've never had or heard of Moxie and I haven't had a New England boiled dinner, but I think I'll pass.

Oh, yuck---ANY type of beets. My mother used to serve them - boiled, pickled and doG knows how else, and there is NO good way to prepare them. Yuck again.
But the idea of pushing jello through the teeth made me giggle. And I needed a morning giggle, so thanks!

I will never eat a Peep, nor a Cadbury Creme Egg. Blech. Just the thought makes me gag. Also, while I will eat anything you can make FROM a tomato, do not think I will ever eat an actual tomato. Blech. The texture and the slime. Blech, blech, blech!

Oh, girl I was with you til the peaches...I make a mean peach cobbler!!

But, yes, for me a lot of it is about texture too. It matters.

Odette said...

I'm with you on most of that except I like Peeps and sushi!

I can't stand olives, smoked salmon, hard boiled eggs, liver and pate. ewwwww

Joanie said...

I'll eat all those things except for sushi (gag!!) and beets (again gag!) I don't know about Moxie though.

I can't eat anything oily. No oil on my hoagie, no tomoato and mozzarella salad. I will visibly gag at the table (and have!)

Peeps are GREAT when stale! and marshmallow peanuts? YUM!

Not a fan of lamb either. The flavor is too strong.

I think we have the same tastes because most of that stuff I won't eat either. I can eat warm peaches, like in a cobbler and I don't mind fresh cabbage, but hate it cooked. Beets, Peeps, Circus Peanuts UGH!!! Totally understand those.

Some of the things on your list I totally agree with- beets, cooked cabbage, corned beef. But hatin' on Peeps, circus peanuts, sushi?? And now I want peach cobbler. Dammit.

When you first started this post, I thought I was writing it! There truly are very few foods I will not eat or try. But most of the things on your yuck list on not on my yuck list, EXCEPT the circus peanuts, sushi & Moxie (to me it kinda taste like a weird mixture of spices stirred into cherry cough syrup)

I guess I could say for sure that I will not eat any organs: heart, liver, kidney, gizzards, or tongue! And definitely no feet - not frogs, not pigs, not chicken. And you will never catch me eating oysters (or the exotic Rocky Mtn oyster, either), whole bellied clams, or octopus.

And definitely not bugs, even if your smoother them in chocolate!

ewww I loathe peeps!

The boiled dinner looks disgusting! even if it is corned beef.

beets-NO, Jello-NO, especially after I found out it is made from animal bone marrow, those peanut things-NO, sushi-HELL NO!

I like cooked peaches, I live in a peach producing area and we eat peaches every way imaginable. Cabbage only in egg rolls, Moxie I have never heard of.

Kim-d says she doesnt like braunschweiger, I LOVE it! mmmmm on crackers with swiss cheese. mmmmm

I think the only thing I don't like that is on your list is the raw sushi. I used to be a commercial fisher(wo)man and I know what some of those fish are like straight out of the ocean. I won't go into details, cause it could be fodder for one of Hallie's Morbid Monday posts!
Sorry all you raw sushi lovers...I don't want to ruin anything for you.

Reddirt Woman said...

Well, I liked Jello until I read Tonjia's comment... I don't do organ meats, especially liver or eggs and brains. I won't even do it to be polite, and believe me, I was raised to be VERY polite.

Beets, I'll pass. No lamb or duck. No rhubarb, in pie or otherwise. No Peeps or Marshmallow Circus Peanuts. But I love, love peach cobbler with fresh whipping cream.

Never heard of Moxie, but I probably wouldn't try it after reading you today. I really like cabbage. Raw, boiled and/or fried. No pickled pigs feet, chicken feet or anything like that, but I do like pickled eggs.

But if I only pick one thing that gives me the full body heaves... it's liver. Hands down.

Very interesting. Thanks.

I love sushi and I ADORE stilton cheese (although it's a migraine trigger) but I'm with you on everything else, especially CABBAGE. If I may hi-jack your blog for two seconds, I have to tell you what happened to me today: today was a crazy day and for lunch, I ended up going through the salad bar at the grocery store before I had to go pick up Ana. I was starving—it was almost 2:00--and I am DIETING so it's not like I had the big filling breakfast of kings.

So, I get my salad and I head to Ana’s school and sit in the parking lot, consuming my salad, with no dressing because I thought I’d have time to go home, dress my salad and THEN pick Ana up. Not to be.

Anyway, I’m eating along when it occurs to me that the leafy greens I thought were LETTUCE are really CABBAGE.

It turns out that a little cabbage goes a long way in my book.

A very long way.

Who puts leafy green CABBAGE out at a salad bar in a bowl as big as the bowl holding the iceberg lettuce? I think that shows just entirely too much emphasis being placed on cabbage. I'm not sure I can live here anymore.

We are completely on the same page albeit for the corned beef. For some reason I love that even though I have no idea where it comes from.
Peeps are very scary! Who thought of making those???

Lanny said...

Woo Hoo! If we went out to eat, I'd be totally confident in you picking the place! :) A lot of your list is on mine too.

I too will eat all those things...never heard of Moxie though, so you may have me on that one. Circus peanuts are delicious when they are super fresh...then they don't squeak!

Scriptor Senex said...

I'll have the cheese and you can stick some beetroot on the plate as well but the rest I agree - not for me, either.

Gucci Mama said...

A kindred spirit! Here I thought I was the only one who thought bleu cheese tasted like feet. So nice to discover I'm not alone in the world...;)

Peeps I can deal with.
I don't know about Moxie.
I love Jello.
Those peanut things taste OK but make my mouth hurt.
Not usually going to eat cabbage unless I HAVE to.
New England Boiled dinner, no.
I like Bleu Cheese dressing and sometimes I can eat the real stuff. Cheese bothers my stomach.
No cooked peaches or sushi.
I can eat a few beets.

I would have to add liver, gizzards, or any other part like that to the hate list. I am not found of things like grits, oatmeal, tapioca, etc... because I don't like the texture. I too am big on texture.
